- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jokka are rather odd people, though their culture isn't all that different (aside from the gender oddities) than several Terran ones. I don't much like the protagonist, though I understand her feelings - as her lover says, she's giving nothing and asking for/taking what she wants. They do go along with it, eventually. I hope she learns something from her experience and passes it on - makes the gift they gave her worthwhile. Interesting story, and I do want to read some more about this people.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is such a powerful, beautiful and heart-rending story... This was my first encounter with the Jokka (even though this review is written based on a reread), and it introduces the world and society exceptionally strongly. There are one or two instances where I felt it was handled more clumsily than it could have been, and they're all the more startling because throughout the story Hogarth displays an exceptional skill with words. Her control is tight and precise, with little to no words wasted. Kediil's voice is strong and its story compelling, dealing with incredibly tough choices and far-reaching consequences in a very short space of text.I'm happy to recommend it to anyone looking for a good read, especially if they're interested in non-human cultures.
