About this ebook
In the grounds of Castlemaine is a peculiar mound, hidden by yew trees. People say it’s the grave of Wild Robert…
Heather finds the mound when she tries to escape the hordes of tourists who invade the stately home where she lives.
“Wild Robert, I wish you were really under there!” she cries. “You could come out and deal with the tourists!”
All of a sudden, there is a smell like earth and strange spices. A voice says, “Did somebody call?”
Heather gets her wish, and nothing is ever the same again!
Wild Robert is a gentle, charming ghost, who is half a magician [on his mother’s side]. He returns after 350 years and is horrified by the antics of the tourists at his once home Castlemaine House. Since he’s a ghost who haunts by day, he plays some wonderfully wicked pratical jokes which drive the tourists away…
Diana Wynne Jones
DIANA WYNNE JONES was born in August 1934 in London, where she had a chaotic and unsettled childhood against the background of World War II. The family moved around a lot, finally settling in rural Essex. As children, Diana and her two sisters were deprived of a good, steady supply of books by a father, ‘who could beat Scrooge in a meanness contest’. So, armed with a vivid imagination and an insatiable quest for good books to read, she decided that she would have to write them herself.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A well-written story that takes readers on an emotional ride along with the main character. I wish the author would write a sequel! Readers could write a short story detailing the events of Heather's second day with Wild Robert.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A haunting and, actually, quite horrible little story about a boy born with fairy blood and murdered by his family. This is published as a title for younger readers, and I don't know quite what the kiddies made of it. I do feel that publishing it like this was rather a waste; it reads like the first few chapters of something much longer, complex and more interesting. I should have liked to have read that book. Quite possibly that's what it was intended to be and it just didn't happen. But if any of DWJ's books are begging for fanfic for completion, this would be the one.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Beguiling, but insignificant. Even if I were 8 years old I wouldn't love it. And the ending is abrupt - do you suppose there were thoughts of a series or sequel?
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Like almost all books by Diana Wynne Jones that I've read, this one was an enjoyable read. It's a short book, meant for young children, but the story isn't too simple. I only wish DWJ could have developed it more and turned it into a longer, more fleshed out story.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Heather is tired of the tourists who over run her home at Castlemaine every summer, even though she knows that it is part of her parent's job as trustees of the historic site. Then one day while trying to escape the flocks of visitors she sits upon the mound of Wild Robert and calls to life the spirit of the young wizard who is determined to claim Castlemaine as his own.I very much enjoyed this cute, quick tale of a sad yet determined spirit who was wronged by those he trusted. I think that if I could convince my 7 year old to read the book, he would like it also. This book is a great chapter book for beginning readers with easily read print and exciting enough to hold a child's attention. The ending did kind of leave off abruptly but it might be the sort of story you could talk to your child about and ponder, "what do you think happened next?"
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Less realized than her usual work. This is one of her books that actually feels like it is written solely for children. An interesting concept with possibilities but too short to really go there. Still good, though, like all Jones' work.
