Chapter One
Rebellious vamp
It's such a dreary night. I love that about the fall. The only thing that annoys me is that people tend to wear turtleneck sweaters.
Tasha Roshenko laughed at her friend’s words. Vivian LeBlanc always managed to make light of a situation. The woman waved her hand at a few college kids who were drunk and disorderly as they crossed the street, daring the oncoming traffic to hit them.
Look at those fools.
After a quick glance at the teens, Tasha turned back to watch the street ahead of her, searching for the right human to dine with.
You always know how to make me laugh, Viv. I'm particularly pissed off tonight.
A sultry eyebrow rose in answer. More than usual?
The sly, light–blue gaze that Vivian shot at Tasha made her grin even wider.
Yes. No matter what I've tried, I still can't find a way to fly. It's so easy for everyone else, but for me, it's a disability that makes me stand out like a sore thumb!
Vivian snickered, and elbowed Tasha as an old woman made her way down the street toward them. How about her?
She doesn't have enough blood in that poor old body to support a mosquito. I thought you'd go for the three teens back there.
A quick shake of Vivian’s head sent her tangled black hair in all directions, and caught the old woman's attention for a brief moment. She soon looked away, and kept walking.
No way. I don't drink alcohol. You know that.
Since you’re fifty years undead now, I'd think you'd have gotten over your ideas of alcoholism, Viv. Vampires don't suffer the affliction.
Still, Tasha, one taste could be the end of me. When I died at twenty two, and was brought over, I swore I would never drink again. Oh, Tasha, will you look at the old biddy's boobs. They practically hit her kneecaps.
At the reminder of why she was land bound, Tasha grumbled, Gravity sucks!
Vivian threw back her head, and laughed.
I'm glad I'll never succumb to it with my magnificent body. I can have any man or vamp I want with this set on me, and they'll never give in to gravity.
Tasha released a deep sigh as they passed the old woman. At least you're claiming modesty. Let's get to the bar and see if there is any fresh blood available tonight. I'm in the mood for some hot stuff.
"I'll take the hott stuff all right, but it may not only be blood." Vivian winked outrageously.
Not finding humor in her situation, Tasha kept walking. Since she couldn't fly, Vivian stayed with her, as she usually did. The lights outside the club, The Bloody Bucket, flashed in a strobe that had the people in line staring up at them as though in a trance. Tasha knew the lights were designed to lure humans to the club so the vamps could feast, and not have to resort to killing. She frowned at the sight of a few men and women wearing turtle necks, and shook her head.
They always make it difficult. How can you puncture their necks, and not leave a trace if there is material in the way? Really, Viv. I think I should become a fashion designer, and ban all of those ridiculous things.
Mmmm...
Tasha noticed that Vivian was already focused on selecting the humans she wanted for the night. It would be two or three at the least to satisfy the vamp's hunger, since she was so young. Over the past six hundred years, Tasha had been able to lower her required meal to only one feed, and still leave the donors standing, though a little weak in the knees from blood loss.
You haven't heard a word I've said all night, have you Viv?
"Sure I have. Fashion, hate, and ridiculous. Mmmm…how about the two hunks at the front there? I could get a little yum, yum at the same time as I drink, and still have room for more. I'll be right back." Vivian rushed over to the two men, and sidled up to them. A few moments later, she came back to Tasha's side, and grinned wickedly.
Why don't you get a few as well? We can have an orgy.
I'm not in the mood, Viv. You know I don't go for that kind of thing. When I do choose one, it's only for a few minutes to feed, and then I let them go.
Come on, Tasha, you haven't had sex in the two decades that I've known you. Give it a go, and you might be able to replace that frown with a grin. You can be such a downer sometimes.
Pain lanced through her heart as Tasha recalled
