About this ebook
Half-gods are supposed to be heroes, the kings of legend and the doers of great deeds. Unfortunately, Daenan, despite his semi-divinity, is still just a boy and for him it isn’t going to be so easy to win the Games and succeed to his step-father’s throne. He will need all of his tricks, lies and bargains if he’s going to make it. He might even (whisper it) have to cheat.

LL Watkin is the pen name for writing partnership Liz Smith and Louise Smith, two sisters from the North of England who've been writing together since, well, forever. We write a mixture of short stories and full length novels in the science fiction and fantasy genres, and while some stories may be more Louise's and others more Liz's, all spring from a collaborative process. In summer 2022 we will publish our new four part novel series, The Snowglobe, which is a double-stranded narrative set in a multi-dimensional universe. It concerns a criminal investigation by Divine Law Enforcement (DLE), which aims to locate and arrest a psychotic demi-god, Kaelvan, who is determined to murder a specific human child. Although the plot includes fantastical elements, most often ESP and telekinesis, the settings are all post-industrial societies, some of them more technologically advanced than our own and others steam-punk in feel.

It was peaceful in the garden temple. The sun beat merciless but futile upon its red tiled roof. Open pillared walls let through the breeze coming down from the mountains with the scent of pine and snow. A low dais, only three steps tall, protected it from the heat reflected from the white gravel surroundings. At the edge of the ring of gravel, at the start of the pathway back to the palace, an ornate fountain was playing cool, soothing music.
This was not why Aethan had chosen it. After several centuries of study he was able to concentrate in the midst of battles. He had chosen it because it suited people’s expectations of where he should work and thus they would not interrupt.
He stood in one corner of the open floor with his staff raised horizontally before him. The staff was a gift from the Gods, from his father in fact, and was capable of cracking continents if used properly, but today he was focussed on its physical attributes. One by one he tuned out his senses until only touch remained. Afrit’s petty kingdom faded from his mind, leaving only the solidity of the limestone paving beneath his bare feet.
The motions of the dance were second nature now. He flowed across the space in a series of twists and leaps, feeling the rightness of the action in the pull of muscles and the altering weight of the staff. He could have been working in a void but for the warmth of air as he breathed. As he began the cycle again, faster, he let his mind fall into the deep trance, felt for the presence of his cousin and love, the half-goddess Kialla, many worlds away. She was travelling in a universe
