1. Beautiful like Raine
Heads turned when Raine McKenzie entered a gay club – any club for that matter. They called her a futch – a feminine butch – in gay circles. Her pencil skirts hung a centimeter or two above her knee, not too short. She wore cobalt blue eyeliner, and purple, pink lipstick; the only makeup she wore. Her naturally straight chocolate-brown hair hung over her shoulders. The fringe, straight cut, covered her eyebrows.
At age fifty-five Raine was a gorgeous woman with beautiful long legs. She wore low-cut camisoles to show off the cleavage of her large breasts. If she wore a blouse, the first three buttons were always loosened.
Men thought she was straight and usually made a pass at her.
You would know she was gay, if your Gaydar was correctly set.
Although Raine didn’t look like a butch, she acted like one. She always paid for drinks, or dinner. Always held the door open for her women friends. She always took the lead – especially in bed.
Lorraine McKenzie was also the prime suspect of a murder case. Although she was a well-known psychiatrist in Pretoria, the police put the blame on her, because the five women killed were her patients.
She always had a clean alibi. No motive, whatsoever, about why she would want the women dead.
Detectives Sandra Clark and Leigh Parsons, from the Murder and Robbery squad in Sunnyside, worked on this case for the past two years. Leigh believed Doctor McKenzie was the killer, but Sandra doubted it.
They missed some clues, but where to find them? They failed each time to catch her. The searching of her house as well as her office produced nothing. They even failed when they followed her.
Was she too clever for the police, or was she actually innocent?

Sandra’s phone rang early the next morning at half past four.
With her head buried under the pillow, she reached her hand out. She got hold of it on the nightstand and answered with a hoarse voice.
Her partner was calling, informing her of another murder.
She sighed, and rose from her bed. I’m on my way,
she said while she yawned.
Leigh gave her the address. She commanded her to hurry up and hung up.
Sandra threw the phone next to her on the bed. Yawned again and stretched her arms above her head.
She dragged herself over to her closet. Put on a pair of light blue denim jeans with a yellow T-shirt, as well as a pair of white sneakers.
She gazed at herself in the mirror while brushing her teeth. She could hardly keep her red, droopy eyes open. Too much booze after a party at the precinct, last night.
One of her colleagues retired after forty-five years of service.
Her eyes enlarged. In thirty years, it would be her. Would she still be in the service at age sixty-five?
She sighed loudly. Splashing more water on her face. If only she could wake up!
She filled her thermal mug with coffee from the percolator. Left her apartment, and took the elevator down to the parking lot. She jumped in her car, took a huge sip of coffee, then headed off to the corner of Rissik and Jeppe street in Sunnyside thereafter.
Medical examiner, Doctor Stephen Jones, and Leigh were already at the crime scene.
She got out of her car and hurried over to them. What do we have?
She took a sip of coffee while she glanced over the corpse.
The same as the others. Strangled. Young woman, early thirties,
Stephen reported.
No witnesses as always,
Leigh said.
Sandra put on a pair of latex gloves. She pushed the victim’s hair back to check the neck. A thin red line was visible. Strangled like the others – like Stephen said.
The two detectives searched the scene after Stephen and his forensics team bagged and removed the body.
Sandra’s eyes narrowed while she glanced at her partner. How is it that you can look so refreshed after a night of partying, and I look like this?
She asked and gestured with her hand to her face.
Leigh chuckled. Because my friend, you haven’t mastered the art of drinking yet.

Raine tapped her pen repeatedly on the desk. Her ten o’clock appointment hadn’t arrived yet. It was already past ten.
She picked up the phone and dialed the patient’s number.
The phone rang a while before it was answered.
Hello, Darlene. Doctor McKenzie here. Did you forget we had to meet for an appointment today?
Lorraine’s eyes narrowed while she listened to excuses dished up to her. Her patient was lying, because she was stuttering.
She took a deep breath and spoke in her seductive, husky voice. Can I book you another appointment? Say, tomorrow afternoon at three?
Her patient refused and stuttered even more. Said she would phone back later.
Lorraine hung up the phone. She locked her hands together in front of her and stared at the wall. A sudden knock on the door interrupted her, while she brooded over the conversation she just had.
Her eyes grew wide when the two women detectives entered her office. "My, my, my! Haven’t seen you two in a while? She smiled and stood up from behind the desk. She nodded while she called them by their names, and gestured for them to sit down.
Leigh sat down on the edge of the couch. She cleared her throat before she spoke. Doctor McKenzie, I suppose you know why we are here?
No, but I’m sure you are going to enlighten me.
She smiled while she glanced at Sandra, who was avoiding eye contact with her by scanning the office.
She drew Sandra’s attention with her husky voice. Detective Clark, you’ve seen my office a thousand times. It hasn’t changed yet. Why don’t you rather look at me? I want to see those fiery green eyes of yours.
Sandra’s face flushed. She sighed inwardly when she turned her head to face the Doctor.
Raine moved across the room, as if she was gliding. She had
