About this ebook

Dr Janet Thompson, VP of R&D at American Doorport, steps through a doorport to San Diego, but lands in San Francisco instead. As she investigates the anomaly, she discovers that forty years of worldwide doorport use has begun to unravel the space-time fabric. Further, she discovers that these anomalies aren't new, but have been occurring since doorports replaced hydrocarbon-powered vehicles as the primary means of transport. An old woman swears that her husband was killed in a doorport accident a year ago, despite official records giving the date of death as more than three years before. A young researcher and part-time dancer dies of cancer, in spite of doorport records indicating she danced until the day she died. Dr Thompson's investigation leads her back to the doorport co-inventors, twin brothers, one now running American Doorport, and the other trying to prove the technology flawed. Dr Thompson's life and the lives of six people around her change in dramatic ways, each having little awareness of the changes as multiple parallel universes begin to cross threads. As Janet escalates her efforts to restore system equilibrium, the space-time fabric recoils with ever-increasing consequences. She saves the old woman's husband, who then finds his wife dead from suicide. She stops the old woman's suicide, only to find them both dead in a murder-suicide. And she realizes that she has to revamp the entire doorport system -- from the time of its rollout forty years before. And that she may lose her life in the attempt.
