Author

Marilyn Vix

Marilyn is a debut paranormal romance novelist. She enjoys the characters that just don't fit in. From witches to time traveling researchers, she is letting her imagination soar to explore new worlds and write all the details down. Marilyn has traveled to Paris, London, Sydney, and Munich. She loves to include these in her settings as much as can allow. Best of all is letting her reader enjoy them through the perspective of a character. She currently lives in Northern California with her husband and cat. The cat, of course, is the center of attention.

    Chapter 1

Hit me. I looked the blackjack dealer square in the eye. He turned over an ace. Blackjack. Yes. I smiled knowing the cameras in the casino were watching me. It wouldn’t be much longer until the House witch spotted me. I never got to play long even without using spells. The House just didn’t trust witches. Maybe just one more hand? I felt like pushing my luck. I took a sip of my piña colada. The dealer dealt the next card, and I fingered the table for another hit. Bust.

The dealer placed down an ace. I knew a luck spell would draw too much attention. But I looked around just in case my energies were putting the House witch on alert. I felt the aura of a woman standing by a pillar at the edge of the blackjack tables. Damn, she was a strong one.

She gave me a knowing smile. I lifted a finger and cast a quick draw spell. I felt the lock down of her counter spell around my hand. Shit. The dealer put another card down. The six of spades. I was going to have to finish this hand the old-fashioned way.

I brushed my hand against the table, feeling the counter spell holding my energies in check. Damn it. I hated the pressure around me, keeping me trapped against using magic. The dealer placed another card. Jack of clubs. I let out a sigh as I felt a hand go around my waist.

Had enough action? he said over the bing of the slot machines.

I picked up my chips, throwing one at the dealer. If you’ve got a room, I’d rather get out of here. I can’t play without some counter spell being thrown at me. There are tons of protection layers. I eyed the House witch. I could still feel the shield around my energies. I didn’t fight it. I knew they’d just throw me out.

A witch can’t stay in here long, I said as I grabbed my drink.

Jeff laughed at me. You should know better, Cat. The casinos won’t let anyone have an edge, including witches. I tried to keep my pout under control as he held up the key card. Got us all set. Now if only we can find the elevators.

I’ll hang on to you. It’s a frickin’ maze in here.

We headed off down one of the carpeted aisles. I stopped and straightened my heels as I got the speed up to slink through the slot machines. Not an easy thing to do when you’re balancing your drink.

Jeff looked up at the sign with the arrows pointing in all directions. Looks like the room elevators are to the right.

Gotcha. I knocked back the rest of the drink and left the glass on a slot machine. Lead on. I could use some pool time. Which reminds me, you’ll love the new suit I got.

Can’t wait to see you in it. Jeff gave me a knowing look as we crossed the aisle to the corridor that led out of the casino.

We waited for the elevator as I stared at the red carpeting and chandeliers in the lobby, trying to keep my mind off of the shields. It was good to be back in the town that never slept. Vegas tolerated witches more than other cities. In fact, they had some pretty happening
