Journals
Tonight is my last night as a teenager, tomorrow I turn eighteen…among other things. Five years ago, this night would have brought celebration and joy, now it holds nothing but fear and sadness. My brothers and I have been sleeping in an abandoned house in Asheville near the mountains. I guess those things haven’t found their way up here yet, that, or they came and went already. I will leave tonight when the boys are asleep, I think it will be too hard for them to see what I am about to become. There’s no way to escape it, the last of our bullets are lodged in the brains of the infected. I wish more than anything I could see my parents, or even any adult for that matter, just one last time. Living in a world full of kids isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but the alliances have made it clear that the US is under quarantine. It was the only way to keep the infection contained, but we know it grows stronger with every passing day. The deadness in their eyes has been replaced by a hunger, but no one really knows what is going on inside those decomposing skulls. That’s probably what scares me the most, knowing absolutely nothing of what I soon shall become. I still remember the day this all began; it was a sunny day with a thick hot breeze that made your clothes stick. It all happened so fast, the infection had spread across America like the plague, somehow killing every adult in the country. Or so they say, we haven’t heard anything since we left the others. Boys, if you are reading this, know that I love you and I left to protect you, keep each other safe. This is nothing like the movies said it would be, there was no way to prepare the world for this.
The journal was tattered and had a weathered look about it. Noah had found it in an abandoned house just north of Asheville, North Carolina, and he had been reading it ever since. The first pages had clearly been pre-war, filled with stories about family trips and school dramas. Then came the stories about war. How North Korea had made a pre-emptive strike on the United States. They hit hard with a massive blitzkrieg ambush faster than any the world had ever seen. Thousands of war planes flew over the country late at night, dropping an unknown chemical based bacterium. They were mostly after soldiers and government officials. The army shot down as many planes as possible, but it was all in vain, as the Koreans were prepared to die to complete the mission and the bacteria had been planted. Then it happened, slowly at first, then increasingly more rapid. People over the age of eighteen began dying, only to return to life. The infected became aggressive, attacking others, who only served to spread the infection further. Noah remembered those days; he had been a young boy when it all began. He and his girlfriend Amy had grown up on the same street, and both of their parents had been hit by the initial wave of infection. Noah had never been able to forget the look on his parents' faces when they came into his
