About this ebook

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Arriaga writes a very intriguing story of Manuel, a shiftless Mexican college student who was sleeping with three women, still living with his parents, and always I need of cash. The story opens with Manuel coming to visit Gregorio, his best friend. We see that their relationship is strained, and soon learn that Gregorio has committed suicide. Later, we realize that a love triangle existed between Gregorio and Manuel and that their mutual love was Tania, a woman for whom Manuel permanently rented a hotel room for their secret trysts. Gregorio wasn't quite as available as Manuel since he had episodic psychiatric hospitalization. So whom did Tania really love? I was intrigued by this story. I wanted to know what really drove Gregorio into madness and despair. I liked the Mexico City setting (I once also ate at Sanborn's!) , the abbreviated chapter sections, the ease of the writing, the story's flow, and its underlying suspense. I was less enthralled by the story's ending. I don't like when new characters are introduced at the bitter end, nor do I like loose ends that seem to want another story written to explain them.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It´s a great book for a summer or to spend time.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Manuel and Gregorio have grown up together as best and only friends even getting the same buffalo tattoo carved into their left arms. So it's tough for Manuel to watch his friend descend ever deeper into madness until Gregorio's final act to end it all. Manuel is also feeling guilty because he's been sleeping with Tania, Gregorio's girlfriend, while his friend has been institutionalised. Can the two surviving members of the love triangle come to terms with their emotions and why can Gregorio affect them even after his death? This is a very gritty and raw book. Despite being less than 200 pages it is not a quick comfort read. There are no sympathetic characters for the reader to hang their hat on and there are a couple of quite unpleasant scenes of sex and violence to endure. Despite that, it did manage to hold my attention and I ultimately wanted to find out how it ended though not all the loose ends are tidied up.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Maybe the translation was at fault, but I thought that this book was truly awful. The story was substantial enough ( a love triangle between two male friends and a girl) but it was impossible to empathise with the womanising protagonist and his insignificant teen-angsty concerns. Shame, because the author also wrote 21 grams and Amores Perros, both of which were fantastic films.
