About this ebook
Riders Coming begins as the Civil War is ending. A Confederate cavalry unit with the assignment of harassing Union troops and disrupting supply lines in the hills of Tennessee has been decimated by four years of hard fighting with little or no replacements. The captain, Matthew Dixon, an ex-sheriff of Sabine County, Texas, has not had contact with his superiors in over a month. The company, down to eighteen men from an original complement of ninety men, has to forage for supplies from a mostly sympathetic civilian population or capture supplies from the Union troops to survive.
Besides Dixon, the troop is led by First Sergeant John Combs, and Sergeant Paul Mueller. All other officers and non-commissioned officers have been killed or wounded. The action starts when the Confederates set up an elaborate ambush of a Union supply wagon. The ambush succeeds but they learn the war has been over for some time. The Union officer leading the supply detail shows them orders, authorizing him to give them amnesty, let them keep their weapons, and go home to resume their lives. The news is devastating to the southerners but after much soul searching, the men decide to accept the terms. They have known for some time the South could not win.
Matt, John, and Paul are going west and decide to travel together. Shortly after crossing the Mississippi at Memphis they encounter a group of Confederate deserters who are also traveling west. These men are raiding, looting and worse on isolated farms and villages as they travel across Arkansas, Louisiana and East Texas. The action is exciting, suspenseful, and non-stop, with a tinge of romance, as they find that these deserters have attacked John Combs' farm, killed his neighbors, and left his fiancee for dead. Justice is served when our men finally catch these killers at a plantation in Sabine County in a wild gunfight against superior odds.
Riders Coming ends as the next novel in the Riders series, Comes A Rider, begins. In Comes A Rider, we follow Matt and Paul as they move west and use their skills as gunmen to bring law and order to the Arizona Territory. The Riders series is the saga of these men and portrays the strong character of the men and women of our past during a perilous crossroads of time in the American west.
