Nathanael's Hunt (A Brethren Short Story) - Deena Remiel

    Introduction

When I first started writing Brethren short stories, it was meant to feed people’s hunger while they waited for the release of Trinity, the first in a series of full-length Brethren novels. I put them online as a free read at my website and it quickly took on a life of its own, with dedicated followers waiting anxiously for new installments. Every three weeks I would post a new installment to a short story. I’ve since gathered those short stories together into one volume called Brethren Beginnings Volume 1, and it’s currently being turned into a graphic novel. I will continue to write short stories for Brethren Beginnings because there are so many compelling stories to tell!

In anticipation of the third Brethren Series novel, Elixxir, releasing soon, I wanted to make sure everyone got to know my dear Nathanael, Brethren Warrior, so I’ve created this Special Limited Edition of Nathanael’s Hunt. I hope you enjoy this short story that introduces you to a very special angel.

Sirens blared like shrieking ravens throughout the prison complex as dogs sniffed and snarled, eager to find their prey. Six guards had been found fatally stabbed at their posts and three inmates were unaccounted for. Alpine State Penitentiary was under lockdown.

I want all of Arizona and New Mexico on alert by 10:48! Notify border authorities immediately. Damn it all! It’s a freakin’ election year.

Yes sir! Tony Garrett, the assistant warden, was already on it. He sent email alerts with photographs of the escapees to surrounding police stations and started a phone chain to nearby homes telling folks to stay inside and lock their doors. Roadblocks and checkpoints were being set up on all major highways and surface roads.

    And then he called Nathanael.

Come on, Joe! Is that all you got in ya’? Nathanael threw a right hook which landed squarely on the left side of his personal trainer’s face. A spray of sweat accentuated its intensity. You punch like a girl!

And you, Joe said as he executed a perfect uppercut to Nathanael’s jaw, wouldn’t know a girl if she walked naked in front of ya’! Nathanael’s head snapped back, and had he worn his brown hair long instead of in a crew cut, it would have been tossed about in a tangled mess.

The verbal sparring continued through two more exchanges of hooks and jabs, and was par for the course in their weekly workout sessions. Nathanael had been using Joe as his personal trainer for five
