About this ebook
The late 19th century was a time of exciting discoveries in the ancient tombs of the Pharaohs in Egypt.
Massive excavations were taking place and archeologists from across the globe were all busy unearthing the precious and mystic relics of ancient civilizations.
At a major site, run by the famed British Egyptologist Francis Wetherby, new fabulous artifacts were being uncovered on daily basis.
At the bottom end of the work force at the site a young man, Yusuf, was employed, along with his small runt camel, called Suzy, to haul the sand and rubble from the mouth of the dig. Yusuf and Francis Wetherby had never met, until one day when Francis had to be at the site very early in the morning.
During this early morning drive to the site Francis saw, in the distance, and through the shimmering heat, a runner, closely followed by a small camel which appeared to be nudging the runner in the back in order to make him run faster. As a former athlete and now a British Representative of the New Olympics Committee, Francis immediately became interested. The runner was moving very fast even under the very hot conditions. Always on the lookout for athletes to compete in the New Olympics which were soon to take place in Athens, Francis decided to find out who the runner was, perhaps he could be persuaded to run for Egypt. He decided to take some timings.
Francis discovered that the runner actually worked for him and the timings he secretly took showed the young man was an extraordinary athlete, who ran at top flight speed and was equal to the best Marathon runners in the world. The problem was that Yusuf had absolutely no idea of the concept of sport.
He ran fast in order to get to work.
He also had some other pressing problems, he was deeply in love with his childhood sweetheart Marelka, she was the daughter of a prosperous business man who had recently died and she was now in the custody of her uncle.
The uncle had plans for her which did not include her being married to a sandboy.
Francis became aware of the situation and began to persuade Yusuf that in order to win Marelka’s hand he must become famous, and run in the Olympics.
Job done....not quite.
Francis was being investigated by Scotland Yard for being involved in the smuggling of Egyptian artifacts to London Auction houses.
In spite of all of the forces ranged against him and Francis, including death threats, kidnapping and attempts on their lives,Yusuf, Francis and Suzy the camel, finally arrived in Greece.
During the race Yusuf and Suzy faced even more threats by the henchmen of Marelka’s uncle and he was almost in sight of winning this great race when tragedy struck. Yusuf now faced the major choice of his life. Sporting immortality as the winner of the most important race in the history of the sporting world, or finding out what had happened to his little camel friend...everything, his entire future, marriage to Marelka, everlasting fame in Egypt, rested on this one decision.
