About this ebook

The name Rain-in-the-Face struck fear into the hearts of white men. He was a fierce Sioux warrior who fought in many battles.
One of those fights was the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where General George Armstrong Custer was killed. Many people say Rain-in-the-Face killed Custer. Others said that he killed Tom Custer, General Custer’s brother, and cut out his heart.
As Rain-in-the-Face lay on his death bed, he told the story of his life to Charles Eastman, who wrote down the words for the world. This book recounts those words, along with additional information and pictures about the Battle of Little Bighorn and Rain-in-the-Face’s life.

Introduction

Rain-in-the-Face was a name that struck terror in the hearts of many. He was so fierce, poems would be written about him.

George Armstrong Custer was a general in the U.S. Army; a general who was known for fighting the Native American people. He was also known for being very mean to them. In 1876 Custer fought against the Sioux Indians at the Battle of Little Big Horn. There Custer was killed.

The white men didn't know who killed Custer, but some of the Indians thought they knew. They thought a Sioux brave named Rain-in-the-Face had done the deed. They also said he cut out the heart of General Custer's brother Tom.

In 1918 Charles Eastman wrote a biography of fifteen Indian Chiefs. He called the book INDIAN HEROES AND GREAT CHIEFTAINS. To get the information on the lives of these chiefs, he would speak with the Chiefs themselves, and with those who knew them. One of the Indians he spoke to was Rain-in-the-Face.

He met with the old man as he lay on his deathbed. Rain-in-the-Face told Eastman the story of his life, and Eastman wrote down the words that Rain-in-the-Face told him.

This is the story Eastman wrote.
