FOREWORD
First, I would like to establish the scope of this work. The research presented here focuses on the direct family of Harman William Whitney Hoffman, and is not expanded to include the families of aunts and uncles, or grandaunts and granduncles. Likewise, it does not include the descendants of any of his siblings, although a brief summary of each of those siblings is included. While I have uncovered a great deal of information regarding Harman’s indirect
ancestors and relatives, I wanted to keep this work as concise as possible. Also, because many of Harman’s grandchildren are still living, concern for their privacy dictated that I not include any knowledge I may have of the details of their lives. For them I have merely listed spouses and children for the sake of other researchers who may be seeking to tie into certain lines.
Second, it would be impossible for me to mention everyone to whom I am indebted. Not only is the list long, but there are those from whose labor I have benefited, but who are completely unknown to me. Suffice it to say that there are many researchers, both professional and amateur, who have provided both material and instruction that was invaluable in completing this project. My thanks also goes to family members who tolerated with good will hosts of questions about themselves, their lives, and their families.
