Carly Wexler is engaged and is planning almost every detail for her wedding on her own. Her mother would be glad to help, but Carly has distanced herself from her parents for years. Her fiance, Peter Novak, a lawyer on the short list to make partner at the Law firm where Carly’s father is the senior partner, is too busy to give any help, but not to busy to demand that his wishes prevail in every detail, including the choice of wedding bands. however, he cannot seem to meet with any of the people necessary to complete these plans.Peter’s brother Mike, the footloose photojournalist has returned to the US to recuperate from an injury obtained during an assignment. When Carly and Mike first meet, you can tell that some sparks are flying between them, but Carly tries to deny the feelings she has for Mike and the ones she doesn’t have for Peter. Peter, caught up in the importance of himself and his job, push Mike and Carly together, pushing some of his duties as the groom off onto Mike, while still maintaining all veto power. Carly’s attraction to Mike and her frustration with Peter’s behavior push her into doing some thinking and rethinking about her own life and how her view of love has skewed her relationships. Mike tries to force Peter into acknowledging that he is using Carly as a way of proving to himself and the world that he is no longer the unwanted, poor, orphan. This is a romance novel, but it contains some important elements about how we love and who we love and why. It’s also a good read.
