    Patchwork Heart

Tattered and beaten down by months of feeling sorry for myself, I left Pittsburgh and crept home to Arkansas with my tail tucked, my eyes downcast, praying no one would notice me. No way could I explain to friends and relatives how I’d managed to lose my husband.

Why, Susan, everyone knows what a great catch Martin was, they’d say, one after the other, discounting my worth entirely.

They could all leave me alone and I’d be happy. Well, not happy, but soberly content.

The nights were chilly in the Ozarks as March moved into April. I holed up at the old family farm place. Didn’t let anyone know I was there. From the meager stash carried from my ruined marriage in the back seat of my aging Honda, I fetched some heavy blankets. Each night I wrapped up in a cocoon of my own making and dreamed of emerging a butterfly. It didn’t happen. Not that I actually expected it. Dreaming, after all, is not faith but hope.

Ghosts from my past kept me company for weeks.
