ABOUT THE AUTHOR
CLIVE FOR PM
ONCE UPON A TIME
It was a hot summer’s morning in western Queensland, the sun beating down relentlessly, the wind blowing the scorched air over him, sucking the life and moisture out of man and everything nature had to offer. It had been a useless week of prospecting, he hadn’t found what he was looking for, and he was about to give it up. But he didn’t like quitting when Fate was driving him forward; there was just something inside that said keep on going, at least for now.
Easy for Fate to say but it was a seriously hot day, the temperature was in the high 40’s – Celsius, that is. Clive looked up at the horizon, it shimmered from the heat. He couldn’t see a bird in the sky, it was too hot for them, and every creature was hiding from the scorching wind that was driving across the country’s deserts, increasing in intensity as it closed in on him. It was so hot that the air burnt his lungs; there was so much dust in the air that it found its way into his clothing, into his eyes, his ears, and his mouth. Every movement he took felt scratchy from dust. He persevered, he had to. His luck had been heading south, he needed a break, he needed to find good mineral prospects soon or he would have big problems. He didn’t want to think about that and how bad it all might be.
Head down, Clive battled on; he was just looking, just getting a feel for the land.
He kicked over a rock with his steel capped boots - that was about all the energy he had left. He figured a few more minutes and then he should head back to his vehicle – he badly needed fluid. He plodded forward, drained of energy, for another ten minutes.
Finally he had enough, Clive turned and retraced his steps and then came to the spot where he earlier kicked over the rock. The spot was moist, and dark in colour, it was very odd, it hadn’t looked like this when he first travelled by. He bent down to investigate, he touched the soil, it was sticky, and had a certain smell to it. He frowned, the smell was familiar but it was impossible. He dug away slowly with his fingers, the liquid oozed through the soil and pooled in front of him. He began to dig wider and deeper and soon he had a puddle a few inches deep and a few feet wide of black, thick goop – he knew what it was, it was oil.
He stood up and pondered the situation. He was four hours’ drive from town, it was Friday late morning. If he hurried he could be there before the mining office closed.
He quickly threw dust and broken shrubs over the oily goo and pegged the location, and ran for his car - he was soon speeding off down the dusty dirt roads for the mining office.
He made it with half an hour to spare and the rest is history.
That day he lay claim to what was to become one of the country’s largest oil fields - somehow all the big mining companies hadn’t identified the field as it didn’t sit in geology that was known for
