Chapter One
Like it or not, meth is everywhere. And, the chances are pretty good that it is not going to go anywhere any time soon. It would also seem, to me anyway, that meth is actually becoming a large part of our everyday culture. I know that a lot of people would disagree with that personal observation but I feel it is true. Of course, if you take a good look around I believe you would see that meth working its way into our lives is not something new, but, it is becoming more and more widespread. Meth is in the movies, books, and the mega-hit television series, Breaking Bad
, is about meth. It is in the music of some of today's hottest country stars such as The Band Perry's song Better Dig Two
. The Zac Brown Band music video for their song The Wind
features a robot (or whatever the hell it is) loading up a large propane tank (or it could possibly be an anhydrous ammonia tank. Both can be used for manufacturing meth) and a wooden box that is clearly marked cold medicine
onto a swamp buggy. Really Zac, could it be any more obvious?
Of course, there are, and have been, many other bands capitalizing on meth. Such as Third Eye Blind with their song Semi-Charmed Life
. The Old Crow Medicine Show and Son Volt both have songs titled Methamphetamine
. I have them both on my MP3 player right now. Old Crow also has a song titled Alabama High Test
. Guess what we called Alabama High Test when I was cooking dope in Alabama? That's right, METH. The list goes on and on...
Drive by Truckers has a song titled You and Your Crystal Meth
, which is a pretty dark look at meth addiction. It's a great song.
Actor Tom Arnold, former husband to actress Rosanne Barr, has been directly affected by meth in his own personal life. His sister, Lori Arnold, ran the first meth empire in the United States, outside of California. She was not just a cook or dealer. This young lady had it going on, employing chemists to run her super-lab that was set up on her horse farm in Kentucky. She was a real go-getter who owned race horses, houses, car dealerships... All paid for with meth.
My point to all of this, and there is one, is that meth is everywhere, has been everywhere for a long time, and will in every likelihood continue to be everywhere for the foreseeable future. The more people hear and read about meth, the more a lot of those people will want to know even more about it. The addiction to meth is two breaths short of being a living entity itself and it will not be ignored. It is my belief that the more people learn about meth, the easier it will be for them to detect the addiction in their own families. Early detection is the key. Remember that.
It almost seems impossible today to pick up a newspaper or watch the evening news without seeing some kind of a report having to do with meth. In fact, meth labs are being busted at such a rate that it isn't even much of a surprise when it happens in your own neighborhood. Today meth labs are being found in schools, the work place, and even in the bathrooms at Wal-Mart. Fucking Wal-Mart! Can you believe that shit? I ask you this, what the fuck is wrong with people in today’s world? When I was cooking meth, cooks had enough sense to practice their craft in out of the way places. Private places. At the very least, places that made sense, like their own houses, garages, outbuildings, and the like.
Sometimes I liked to take my chances and would find myself cooking in motel rooms. But, being smart and using common sense is what kept me from getting busted when I did such things. There are dumbasses out there, like the idiots who think it is a good idea to do a cook at Wal-Mart. These geniuses often get caught fairly easily and deserve what they get when it is all over and done with. Many times, these same people will even tell you they deserved their punishment. Unfortunately, most of these guys will go right back out and do the same ignorant bullshit again once they get out of jail.
In Alabama several years ago, someone had the brilliant idea to rent a storage unit at a public storage facility. At night, the dude would have his wife lock him in the unit so he could do his little cook. When he finished the cook, the dude would call his wife on her cell phone, from his cell phone, and she would come unlock the unit to let him out. Now, I am not going to condemn this idea completely for one simple reason; I have thought about doing it myself on more than one occasion and I am quite sure there are people out there today who are doing this very thing and getting away with it beautifully.
Well, with this dude things did not go very good. Not long after locking him in, the wife gets a frantic phone call from the dude saying that there is a fire in the building. She rushes back to let him out but before the girl makes it there, he burnt to death. Trapped inside the unit. I am sure the wife was altering charges with something over the incident but I can't honestly say what those charges would have been. I would venture to guess that manufacturing meth
would be a good place to start.
I used to do quite a bit of cooking, and prepping chemicals for a cook, while traveling in vehicles. Both while traveling down the highway and while parked. When I was parked, it was normally somewhere where I didn't have to worry about anyone seeing what I was doing. That, to me anyway, just makes sense. However, not everyone thinks the same way I do but I wish they did because it would sure make people a whole hell of a lot easier to figure out some days.
In the late 1990's, a few years before I ever even thought about becoming a meth cook, meth lab busts were very uncommon in the area I lived in. That is why it was big news, and quite a surprise to everyone around, when a lab was found to be operating in the parking lot of the grocery store right down the road from my house. Back then there were no restrictions on the amount of cold medicine you could purchase. This was the good old days for meth cooks but it also made people do really stupid shit.
According to reports, on this particular bright, sunshiny day, a not so bright individual had spent a little time purchasing a large amount of cold medication from a local pharmacy. Once he was well supplied, the dude drives his pickup truck to the parking lot of the grocery store where he climbed into the camper the was on the back of the truck and began cooking meth. It is not known how long he was cooking there but, when he finished, he opens the windows of the camper to air it out then he gets out and walks into the store. This is where he buys another large supply of pills for another cook. A gas station attendant close by sees the smoke from the cook coming out of the camper and calls 911, thinking there is a fire. The cook comes back minutes later carrying several more boxes of pills he had just purchased with the intent of doing another cook in the same place. He enters the camper shell again, only seconds before being surrounded by fire trucks, police, and an ambulance. Since there was a middle school across the street, I would guess he got his ass handed to him in court.
When I do a cook in a moving vehicle, I have one rule I try never to break; No cooking and driving. You just never know what will happen, and it's just a really good idea to keep your eyes on the road while operating a motor vehicle.
In 2004, a truck driver, driving through Elizabethton, Tenn. rear-ended a car sitting at a red light in front of Elizabethton High School. To keep from blocking traffic and since there were no injuries, the drivers pulled into the high school parking lot. Before long, the police arrived, and during their investigation, determined that the truck driver was intoxicated. He was taken into custody for DUI, but the charges were soon upgraded to possession and manufacture of methamphetamine, when a lab was found operating in the sleeper of the truck. The charges were made worse by the fact that he was cooking on school grounds, once he pulled his truck into the parking lot.
Since some ingredients for cooking meth can be expensive, hard to come by, or require a lot of work to prepare for use, they are obviously very valuable to a meth cook. Other items, while not expensive or hard to come by, are watched.
This means that if someone notices you buying unusually large amounts of a certain item, they will call the cops on you. That isn't always as fun as it
