About this ebook

Halloween Is A Weird, Weird Night

It’s super-heroine Sonika’s first Halloween out on patrol. She’s always been warned that odd things happen on October 31, but between gorillas walking down the street holding a map, the bride of Frankenstein beating up a would-be mugger, and multiple men showing up in almost identical Sonika costumes, who’s to say that the guy dressed as Mary with a little lamb isn’t just a partier -- or something else?

Eilis Flynn

Elizabeth M.S. (Eilis to her friends) Flynn has spent a large share of her life working on Wall Street or in a Wall Street-related firm, so why should she write fiction that’s any more based in our world? She spends her days aware that there is a reality beyond what we can see and tells stories about it. She lives in verdant Washington state with her equally fantastical husband. Her books can be found here, and check out emsflynn.com, at Flynn Books Words & Ideas .

    Halloween For A Heroine

    A Sonika Short

    By Eilis Flynn

For cops, paramedics, and super-heroes alike, Halloween was prime time for bizarre activity, especially with a clear night sky. The moon was waning—thank heavens for small favors—but the crescent moon emitted enough light for Sonika, the city of Morrissey’s latest super-heroine, to be hyper vigilant on patrol.

Autumn had arrived kicking and screaming that year, but by the time the end of October revealed itself, the weather had turned cold but dry, perfect conditions for All Hallow’s Eve and the influx of drunken partygoers passing through the Mission Mercy district.

Sonya Penn, in her guise as Sonika, had to have passed more than fifty costumed partiers in her first fifteen minutes on patrol, her very first October 31st patrol as a super-hero. Growing up with her parents, the super-heroes Sounder and Velocity, she had had dreams of keeping the city safe from muggers and thugs and even super-villains in the family tradition, but right now…right now, she just had to keep it safe from drunks. And save the drunks from themselves.

While she could have gotten a good look at the neighborhood from the rooftops, she liked to keep close to the ground, and as a result, she patrolled from street to street, alternating between the ground and the fire escapes. Details could be lost from up too far, she knew, and also lost if she were too near. Although in this case, she would have been perfectly happy to not see too much. Halloween was turning out to be an interesting experience.

She dropped to street level without making a sound. Mission Mercy, the dilapidated warehouse district where she did a fair amount of her patrolling, teemed with weirdoes and oddballs the way she had never seen it before.

Seriously, she could have done without it.

Ordinarily, at this time of evening, the streets of the district were empty. Occasionally, a rat would skitter past, or a mugger looking
