    The Boyhood of Buffalo Bill

When I was but a boy, I lived out on a farm in the vast countryside of Iowa, my Pa, Isaac Cody, had emigrated there while the state was still frontier. Indians slouched through the villages or loped along on their ponies and the stirring love of adventure was in my Pa's blood. In those days the railroad extended only as far as Port Byron, across the river in Illinois, but when in 1849 the cry went out that gold had been discover in California, all the country went wild.

Men began to swarm on the railroads out to the Mississippi and there began the long journey in covered wagons over the plains. Naturally, my Pa caught the general excitement.

In 1854, when I was eight years old, my Pa picked up the family and headed west for Kansas. Two wagons carried household goods. A carriage was provided for Ma and sis.
