Wanneer Marcia Luyten na twee jaar in Afrika terugkeert naar Nederland, zit er een vreemde waarschuwing op de deur van haar krakerssauna: ‘Kijken is hier seksuele intimidatie’. Het is de opmaat voor een beschouwing over hoe Nederland verandert. Met de frisse blik van de betrokken buitenstaander laat Luyten zien hoe in politiek, economie en cultuur de open samenleving zijn vrijheid en welvarendheid prijsgeeft. Met kortetermijndenken, een roofzuchtige elite en afkalvend vertrouwen werd de kredietcrisis onvermijdelijk. En er zijn meer ontwikkelingen waarin we op Afrika gaan lijken.
Marcia Luyten
Marcia Luyten (1971) is econoom, cultuurhistoricus, schrijver, journalist en publicist. Sinds 2012 is zij presentator van het programma Buitenhof. Luyten schrijft voor onder meer NRC Handelsblad en Vrij Nederland. Van 2006 tot 2010 woonde ze in Kampala, Oeganda, van 2001 tot 2003 in Rwanda. Van haar hand verscheen in 2003 Witte geef geld, in 2008 Ziende blind – hoe onze politiek, economie en cultuur ‘Afrikaanse’ trekken krijgen en in 2013 Dag Afrika. Momenteel werkt zij aan Het geluk van Limburg, een sociaal-culturele geschiedenis van de glorie en ondergang van de steenkolenmijnen. Zij woont en werkt in Broek in Waterland.
