About this ebook

Well into adolescence, Dougal is finally doing his duty to the diet and marrying his allotted bride, Verbena. They risk their lives by going abroad for the honeymoon. On their return, Dougal, Verbena and the whole community face the biggest threat of all: heresy!
A riveting tale of a not-so-distant future in which who you are is what you eat. And loyalty depends on sharing, or refusing to share blood. Literally. Dark Future, good reading.

He stands alone at the altar.

Dougal knows that it is the fourth day of the fourth month. He knows that the great event of this propitious day is his own Wedding Celebration. He knows he must be happy. Dougal's diet-consciousness is high, for a southerner. Cod’s roe will not be served.

The young man has been lonely in recent years. Because Dougal insisted on remaining a bachelor, people around his own age treated him as beyond the pale. Lonely, but resolved: determined to get ahead through achievement and conformity in major matters. His marriage will cement that reputation. He will be a good husband, a loving father. That kind of thing.

Dougal hears movement at the back of the hall. His appointed bride must be approaching. At last! He glances round to
