Introduction

Model railroading used to be a very popular hobby in the old days before the invention of modern technologies that are now preferred by many for entertainment these days. Rarely are model trains even mentioned as a possible hobby to enjoy in today’s culture. The hobby faded out gradually through the years as more and more technological advancements and inventions took over their popularity in entertainment priorities.

Other than those who are accidental railroad enthusiasts because of close family members who love model railroading, knowledge of model railroads and what they can offer today is virtually unknown to younger generations. While that is regrettable, it can also be beneficial for young and old alike by infecting (or re-infecting) them with the model train bug that seems to be a new discovery to the young.

Trains can hold the interest of younger generations as well as older ones partly because the railroad technologies have also advanced with the culture and are beginning to gain more and more value as educational entertainment that offers a lot of fun and learning to railroaders of any age. Sometimes children will place more value on knowledge that seems like a new discovery to them.

We tend to dismiss any hobbies or entertainment that our ancestors enjoyed as ones with little value in reality today in light of our technological advances. Returning to hobbies of old can seem like a regression back to times where they didn’t know any better and to hobbies that were endured because there was nothing better available. Progression can be valued too highly in every generation and can cause us to throw out the baby with the bath water.

There are many areas in our culture today that could enjoy various benefits offered through enjoying the hobby of model railroads and it is rewarding to help people discover for themselves just how much fun and educational value railroads have to offer.

Not only is model railroading a unique hobby to enjoy with the youth of the home, their friends, and your friends, it is just as valuable as a bonding tool between the older generations and younger – especially grandparents or elderly family and friends who play similar roles in the lives of your children.

Sometimes it can be difficult to find common ground between the old and the young that is entertaining enough for both generations to enjoy and want more of. It is status quo in our technological age for the youth in families to be much more knowledgeable and perhaps even a bit arrogant about computers, cell phones, and all the electronics that might be unfamiliar and/or uncomfortable for older generations.

Children are often seen teaching their grandparents how to operate a computer, voice messaging on cell phones, and MP3 players, etc. Train sets can be a unique leveler that allows both generations to be more knowledgeable than the other in some areas which can be great for helping both understand the valuable strengths each can offer as they work together with a model railroad.

The young might better understand the technological advancements that are available now for railroading involving technology that did not exist for earlier generations. But the knowledge available through life experience and wisdom coupled with the know-how to enjoy model railroads to the utmost with more over-all knowledge belongs to older generations who might have been playing with these railroad systems for more than 50 years or so.

Building a railroad model together will cause the young to respect the knowledge and experience of their elders and perhaps be surprised at the fun that can be enjoyed
