Invasive Species
John Cheever cleaned the last dish, wiped the counter again and again and again. He liked things neat. His brown hair was neatly trimmed, office-chic maybe, though he worked in no office, and his shorts and t-shirt were always neat, clean. A speck of dust on a table could send him for a cloth to remove a mote. His wife scolded him for his obsession.

John was a short fellow, sturdy in arm and leg, who knew how to rebuild things. He was a carpenter. He was twenty-eight years old, enjoyed his freedom, and thought, it should be right.
