This book is a work of fiction. Any similarities to persons living or dead is merely coincidental. All of the characters, events, and organizations are generated by the author's imagination, or are used fictitiously.
1 – Three Old Cases
Detective Oliver thought he had something. Staring back and forth between two computer screens. Looking at corpses.
Earlier in the year, there had been a few unremarkable deaths, heart attacks. They were looked at by other detectives, but checked out as legitimate medical deaths.
Looking at the three deaths: All women, all relatively young, all working in professions that were dominated by men.
One was a professional body builder, one was a mechanic, and one was a vet that just got back from Iraq.
Connected? Maybe. But one other small point: The first died on March 8th. Oliver did a quick search, and found that March 8 is International Women's day.
The next woman died one week after the first. The third died about two weeks after the second. Connected?
Ollie's old rusty radar was spinning and glowing inside. He knew something was there. But what?
He opened his desk drawer and grabbed one of the bottles of pharma pills. He forgot what hour he was supposed to take this one. Every eight hours? Every twelve hours?
Oh well, gulp one down and fight the pain in his back a little. He used the cold coffee left in his cup to help bring the pill down.
Three women, all young. They died of heart attacks. Nothing was stolen, no sign of anyone having entered their houses.
All three unmarried without kids. All three in tough jobs that are usually filled by men. Is that a connection?
Or is it just the daydreams of an old man? An old man that was supposed to retire last year. An old man who is still at work when almost everybody else is gone.
Oliver looked at the time in the corner of the computer screen: 11:33. Hmm. The trouble was he had no place to retire to. Where was he supposed to go? What was he supposed to do?
Stupid pill not working. Can't these scientists come up with the once and for all pill? They get paid enough.
Another thing: All three women were very fit, even muscular. They all had short hair. From the photos it was obvious that all three were dedicated to the gym.
Ollie looked at the black woman's corpse. Beautiful face. Very sharp line of the jaw, of the nose. Classy face. But tough. Looks like someone who permanently frowned.
This is the trouble with computers, they always connect things that no human in their right mind would connect.
Their ages are similar, their professions are similar, their marital status too. All of them living in the San Diego area. None of them bore children.
Ollie's back clicked and he grunted a bit. Operation from five years back that did nothing but increase his pain. Splendid.
Nevertheless, bring these three up to the Chief first thing tomorrow morning. See if he can get some time to check things deeper.
2 – Chief Gerstein
Ollie, what have you got?
The Chief said to Oliver as he lifted a cup of coffee to his lips. Ollie took a deep breath and said:
Chief, you remember those young women dying from heart attacks earlier this year?
Yeah.
Ok, there may be a connection.
Are you kidding?
"Chief, the computer spit some stuff out.
