MAX SPEED - CHASING SHADOWS
Chapter One
The girl felt overwhelmed with a sensation of euphoria as she stepped barefoot over the cold, stone slabs. Her breath was heavy with excited, sexual anticipation. Hushed voices from the shadows hissed an ancient language she didn’t understand. A mild, night breeze blew across the large room, lit only from the moonlight high above the arched, stone windows. The walls and stone pillars shimmered pale, gray between the inky, black shadows. The stone floor was cool to the touch underneath her feet.
Reality became blurred. Her mind fogged with feelings of passion and lust that she couldn’t describe or explain. Nothing seemed to matter. Only that she was there with this person who was such an enigma. She looked up at him. He was tall, well over six feet, with jet black hair, spiked back from his forehead. His rough hands moved gently around her body and slipped the white dress downward to the floor. She stood naked in front of him without any feeling of self consciousness. She was ready to give herself to him, a plaything to do whatever he wanted with her.
She moaned with pleasure as his hands slid over her shoulders and down her back. The voices in the shadows grew louder. The girl closed her eyes as he brought her close and gently moved his hands slowly and passionately over her body. She whimpered slightly with the pain when he nibbled her neck. His incisor teeth sank deep into the soft flesh, a second later. She knew something was wrong but didn’t care as he eagerly drunk her blood. She felt weak and dizzy before finally succumbing to unconsciousness.
Icy wind blew huge snowflakes, almost horizontally, across the Manhattan streets. The sun dipped from a gray winter sky behind the tall buildings and skyscrapers, altering the landscape color from wispy white to an orange glow. Shards of sunlight reflected from the vast range of glass and steel structures. Early evening traffic began to swell and clog the streets.
Max Speed turned up his great coat collar against the biting cold and felt glad his work was over for the day. He’d finally wrapped up a case of ongoing theft from a major department store in Midtown. The theft case had grown long and tiresome and taken a month to solve, with over two thousand staff as suspects. The culprits were a pair of young, wide boys, making some extra cash by selling shop returns on the back street market. He felt sorry for them in a way. Living on retail wage in New York City wasn’t easy. Max Speed struggled to live on his own salary, as a Private Detective. The only things keeping him above the breadline were the perks, bonuses and very occasional hefty tips.
The snow clouds cleared, revealing a crisp, darkening blue sky. It had been a long day. Max Speed felt weary and ached all over. He looked for a vacant cab but a voice in the back of his head persuaded him to go to the bar across the street. A shot of Bourbon relieved the aches and a glass of beer revived his senses. The bar was filling with workers from the heart of the city. The décor consisted of light wooden paneling covering the walls contrasting the worn burgundy carpet and stools. A pretty, well dressed girl in a dark blue jacket and skirt with dark hair and a huge smile introduced herself as Karen, before striking up conversation at the bar. Speed was about to ask her for her cell number when his own phone vibrated and blasted a Surf Rock ring tone.
The caller I.D. flashed the name of Victor Kroll. He outwardly groaned. It was too late in the day for heavy, work related conversations. Speed briefly considered clicking off the cell phone.
Excuse me, I have to take this. It’s my boss,
he said to the girl. What can I do for you, Victor?
He spoke into the cell phone.
Victor Kroll sensed the
