    Foreword—Stephen R. Covey

This insightful life-changing book teaches solid principles on how to achieve chronic happiness. Many people measure wealth in terms of financial strength or number of possessions. In this book Roice does not impugn financial riches or possessions but rather encourages the reader to find wealth beyond financial riches. He encourages every reader to discover and live character principles that will create chronic happiness.

8 Keys to Wealth Beyond Money focuses not only on helping a person succeed in building a positive, contributing character but also in building financial wealth. The core framework of the book, The Eight Keys to Chronic Happiness Cycle, demonstrates how happiness and financial wealth can be achieved simultaneously.

In my book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People the subtitle is Restoring the Character Ethic. This book compliments that theme by pointing a person to building their character first. Being trustworthy, having high character and high competence precedes trust. It is foundational to building effective interpersonal relationships. George Santayana said, Character is the basis of happiness and happiness the sanction of character. As pointed out so well in this book both happiness as well as financial wealth can be achieved by first focusing on character and then upon interpersonal relationships.

To understand the principles which govern personal happiness is to have found invaluable treasure. This book teaches such principles. Learning the principles and applying them in your life can bring you profound happiness.

Roice has spent 70% of his professional life doing business outside of the United States. As one of the co-founders of Franklin Covey, he spearheaded our global expansion. He rubbed shoulders with people in the great cultures of the world and has gained great sensitivity in understanding the uniqueness of each country and culture he visited.

Through teaching hundreds of workshops and advising thousands of people around the globe, he has attained a deep appreciation and love for our richly diverse global family. Among those he has met and worked with he created deep, lasting relationships that have endured decades.

You will find as you read this book the spirit and wisdom of an excellent teacher. It is easy to read and to understand. It contains interesting, poignant lessons inculcated with personal anecdotes that illustrate each major point.

The unpretentious wisdom of this book comes from a man who has found happiness in his own life.

Through this book he shares his personal wealth with you.

    Wealth Beyond Money—an Overview

It's pretty hard to tell what does bring happiness. Poverty an' wealth have both failed.

    – Kin Hubbard

I have spent years absorbing knowledge and wisdom from a diversity of peoples, cultures, and religions. I have been blessed to work with and learn from many of the great thinkers of the world, men and women who collectively have changed millions of people’s lives. I seek advice from the best sources and books that I can find, and I have turned my experiences into a program of seminars and workshops for entrepreneurs and leaders all over the world. My profession is about the strategies of wealth and happiness, and my goal is to make everyone with whom I come in contact happy.

However, when people hear Money does not buy happiness, they nod in agreement and spend every waking moment trying to prove it wrong.

    Wealth Defined

Jon Huntsman grew up in a two-bedroom house with no plumbing—in poverty, by American standards—but ultimately became one of the wealthiest men in the world. Presently, he is Chairman of the largest privately held petrochemical corporation in the world, Huntsman Corp., and Forbes magazine lists him as the 47th richest man alive, worth $6.6 billion.¹

    1. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,270019062,00.html

Whether you know him or not you have probably used his products—the Styrofoam egg carton, for example, or the McDonald’s burger packages of yesteryear. We do not see those products anymore, because when Mr. Huntsman learned that such packaging might harm the environment he voluntarily stopped making them and went on to other things—one of them, notably, being the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. The Institute is where you find cancer patients receiving the most advanced treatment in the world, given with all the hospitality found at five-star hotels.

Jon Huntsman’s goal—besides curing cancer—displays on a wall at his institute:

Selfless giving unto others represents one's true wealth.

Call him crazy, but he intends to donate $1 billion to charity and has already surpassed the $350 million mark! Mr. Huntsman knows the keys to achieving chronic happiness. He discovered that money does not buy happiness, that selflessness service makes him happy even if it means spending most of what he earned.

Not many billionaires embody Wealth Beyond Money like Jon M. Huntsman, and not many define wealth like he does. Take for instance the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, which provides the following definitions:

abundance of valuable material possessions or resources

all property that has a money value or an exchangeable value

all material objects that have economic utility

That is a starting point, but I believe that the definition goes beyond money and material possessions. I would enhance it—

abundance of valuable personal skills and material possessions or resources

all property, including a person’s talents, that has a money value or an exchangeable value

all material objects, services, and a person’s abilities that have economic utility

The most valuable personal assets we possess define us—our values, knowledge, beliefs, talents, and skills—and they constitute our greatest wealth. It is a wealth of character. Our intrinsic characteristics create material wealth and happiness when we enable them. They create our greatest satisfaction and personal security, our inner peace, and happiness. This type of wealth cannot be quantified or stolen. It does not lose value in an economic collapse.

Like building material wealth, we must build true wealth of character. It is not something that simply happens. I can teach you how to build it.

    Happiness Defined

Defined, happiness means a state of well-being and contentment.

Finding that state of well-being and contentment requires certain thought patterns and behavior—keys that you can either hang up and ignore or put to use by opening doors. I believe happiness is the joy and peace that naturally settles in your heart when you tap into the values that emanate from the Maker of the Universe. It is a state of well-being and contentment, but you must willfully create or tune into it.

You achieve happiness when you conscientiously choose good things over bad things, when you actively listen to that inner voice whispering gentle reminders of what thoughts and actions are right and wrong. When you let your conscience direct you, you find happiness. It is that simple.

Chronic Is Not a Bad Word

Chronic gets a bad rap—chronic pain, chronic symptoms, chronic headache…. When your doctor says chronic anything, you know you will be standing in line at the pharmacy.

Defined, chronic means marked by long duration or frequent recurrence. Always present or encountered.

Wait a minute—doesn’t always present or encountered define how you would like wealth and happiness prescribed to you?

Do you know someone who is consistently happy? They normally carry a smile on their face. They may sing a tune or skip along as they walk. I watch my grandchildren and see such moments in their lives. I see it with neighbors and friends. I like to be around happy people. I want to be like them, and I hope that this book creates more of them!

    Achieving Chronic Happiness—The Cycle

A cycle is a succession of recurring events. We live his way, spending our days performing cycles or patterns of behavior that define who we are, developing habits with consequences that we often do not think about—until those consequences arrive. In The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven R. Covey tells us that habits are "powerful factors in our lives…they express our character and produce our effectiveness…or
