    A Brief History of The Beatles in Liverpool

    In 1957, sixteen year old John Lennon formed his first band with his school friends. They settled on the name The Quarrymen after John’s school, Quarry Bank. In July of that year Lennon met fifteen year old Paul McCartney who joined the group. It was McCartney who later invited George Harrison to watch the group. Lennon was initially unsure about Harrison joining as he was only fourteen but Harrisons guitar technique was impressive enough to gain him a place, and the core of The Beatles was formed.

    The Quarrymen held together for a few years but by 1959 there were only the three guitarists left, playing under the name Johnny and the Moondogs. In 1960 Lennon invited his friend from art school, Stuart Sutcliffe, to join the group. Sutcliffe suggested the name The Beetles. Variations on the name followed including The Beatals and the Silver Beetles. The groups briefly toured Scotland with singer Johnny Gentle. In July 1960 they were called ‘The Silver Beatles before finally settling on The Beatles in August.

    Up until this point the group had suffered from the problem of a lack of full time drummer. Their unofficial manager, Allan Williams, auditioned and then signed Pete Best to the group. The group then began their first residency in Hamburg. Harrison, seventeen years old in 1960 lied about his age to enter Germany. By
