- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This ebook of three short stories based on Christmas Carols is a young hip way of looking at old Christmas songs. She has an interesting take on the Christmas stories that she has decided to base her short stories on. This is a short, fun read.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Three French Hens: A Christmas Collection contains 3 short stories. 1. All I Want For Christmas Are My Two Fang Teeth; A story about a vampire stalking an elderly woman. It was cute and quirky. I liked the twist ending & the way things turned around in the story. Somewhat unexpected. Although I am a little tired of anyone writing a vampire story these days referencing Twilight.2. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing; This story is about a singing competition, resembling the X Factor. I would have liked a little more originality. The twist at the end was cool, but I think most people may see whats coming.3. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town; In this one a young lady is home alone on Christmas Eve. When she goes out for a smoke, something odd takes place. I didn't care for this story at all. I thought the plot was idiotic, and the ending was just nonsense. Sorry it just didn't appeal to me.All in all, I give this collection a 2. It may have been a 3 or 3 1/2 if not for that last story.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Ahhh Christmas, a time of sweetness, good will toward men, and all that stuff. Well, if that's what you want from a Christmas story, GO AWAY!! You won't find it here! This trio of stories looks at the darker side of things. First up is a vampire that gets caught in a situation he'd rather not be in. Then there's a game show with some unusual contestants. Finally, a woman with an ability most of us don't have. All the stories are short, so they make for a quick read. If you enjoy quirky stories and twist endings, you'll definitely enjoy these. You're sure to get a chuckle from how things turn out.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I won this book from Librarything in exchange for an honest review. There's a lot of spunk to this little collection of stories. My favorite by far was the first story. Since they are short and have a twist to each one, I won't go into too much detail, but the first had the best twist. The other two were interesting but were less satisfying. It was overall a fun read!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a collection of 3 short stories all centered around Christmas and each with a paranormal aspect. The first has a vampire who is preying on an elderly lady, the second deals with a reality television show featuring a singing trio of sisters that turn out to be demons and the third has a main character named Darcy who is a time traveler that encounters Santa Claus. Each of these stories have a twist in them which I really enjoyed. They could have had another proofread as there were some typos. This was a quick read and a good break in between my normal reading. I liked these stories overall but they didn't engage me like some others I have read.I received this ebook free through LibraryThing member giveaways in exchange for an honest review.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Three short stories reflecting on the dark side of Christmas. Whilst I enjoyed these I didn't really engage with them. It was good to read something different to what I normally read and was grateful to receive a copy of this through the Member giveaway scheme.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed all three of the short stories. I liked the link between them of the holidays and enjoyed the "dark side" of the stories as well. They were entertaining, light and actually kind of funny. I did however notice that they needed to be proof read to eliminate all of the grammatical errors. I received this book through the LibraryThing Member Giveaways and appreciated the chance to review it!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Even though there were some grammatical errors throughout this book, I still enjoyed reading it. I enjoy Christmastime, and I enjoy the "dark side," so the mix fit me perfectly. I especially liked the first story, most notably because I have a romantic soft spot for vampires. However, all of the stories were very good in their own right.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Three French Hens is a collection of three short stories by Gayle Ramage which I received through Librarything Member Giveaways. I must confess that I have a fondness for Christmas anthologies. I don't mind if the stories are a bit schmaltzy or silly. It is an indulgence that I can partake in once a year, like shortbread cookies or eggnog. These stories each take their names from a Christmas carol, but for two of the stories the name of the story, and the fact that the stories take place around Christmas time, were completely irrelevant to the plots of the stories. One of the stories was a spoof on an X Factor-like talent show and on Vampire stories They read rather like skits for Saturday Night Live or another sketch comedy show and were funny, short spoofs. The third included Santa in the story but the punch line seemed to be that Santa is a whiner. The purpose seemed to be to introduce the main character, a time-traveller, who is apparently the protagonist of a future series. Altogether the stories weren't bad, and were funny spoofs of the various genres. However, readers expecting a “Holiday-themed” anthology will be disappointed.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5These are not the fairytales of your childhood, presented here is the christmas which would've given you nightmares as a kid. The plots are interesting, well thought through and funny but the stories lack a few finishing touches and I would've liked them to be slightly longer. That being said, I enjoyed reading it and I recommend it as a quick and fun read. The character descriptions alone are worth the read.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book is a collection of three Christmas-themed short stories: "All I Want for Christmas Are My Two Fang Teeth," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town."The first story chronicles the fate of an over-confident vampire. I love the concept of the elderly being targeted for their richer taste. It's promising, but the delivery is sorely lacking a good editing, and the ending is weak. My inner editor ground her teeth during the read because of spelling errors (misteltoe), hyphens instead of em dashes, capitalization glitches (christmas, tourettes), duplicate wording (is visible is visible), and missing commas. The ebook format I received also had extended spacing between paragraphs, which may not have been the author's choice, but it gave the impression of a student double-spacing an essay to meet a minimum length requirement. The second story tells what happens when the supernatural meets a televised talent show. The character descriptions are colorful, and it was interesting to see how audience reaction, polls and social network feedback contributed to the TV show's activities. I got a chuckle at the identify of the "Lou" character who appeared in a track suit and speaking in a Yorkshire accent. This story's ending was more satisfying too. The story, however, suffers from similar editing gaps and has other odd phrasings. The third story is a gritty look at Santa and his encounter with the take-no-crap Darcy. Darcy feels real with her flaws (such as her inability to blow smoke rings despite multiple attempts), and there are comical story elements such as the bus driver who is caught in the act of picking his nose. I didn't notice if Darcy's supernatural ability was ever explained; I wondered about that. (I also wondered why there were only SIX reindeer for Santa.) However, the ending is weak in comparison to the rest of the story, and this story suffers from editing oversights similar to those in the other stories.Note: I received a free ebook version of this work for review.
