Totally emotional page-turner. The characters and the setting were so vivid. Probably my favourite read of 2005.

THE TIME TRAVELER

1952.

You did what.....??!! Megan stood with her back against the kitchen sink. A perplex look on her face, and yet a shimmer of worry in her eyes. Frank could not keep his head up straight and look her in the eyes. His gaze lowered to the cup of coffee on the table in front of him, following the small twirls of steam rising up from the cup. Frank could not utter any word to give a response. All he heard in a far distance was how Megan, with even more expression of questioning his sanity, repeated her question.

Well, you know how science has helped me said Frank finally. I thought it would be a good thing to somehow do something back. Now it was Megan's turn to drop her gaze to the kitchen floor. Suddenly she was back just those seven short years ago. Time had gone by so fast, and yet it seemed so long ago. Not only was she reminded of what had happened seven years ago. She also realized that she had scraped it out of her memory. Not because it was so long ago, but more because she did not want to be reminded how she almost lost Frank. There was such a large amount of pain and fear involved with that time period, that it made her knees tremble just thinking back. She could feel the blood drain from her face as her mind spiraled back to that horrible experience.

It was 1944. She and Frank had just gotten married, and were expecting their first child. But with the news of the Nazis making their way through all of Europe, America was gearing up for stopping them in their tracks. With shakes of fear, and tears in her eyes she gave Frank one more hug, trying to kiss him one more time. But Frank had suddenly stiffened up, and had turned his eyes and attention away from her. She could sense he knew that he might never see her again, and he distant himself from her to not have to feel that pain and fear.

Then he entered the train with dozens and dozens of other young men. All willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to preserve freedom. It would just be a few months later that Megan got the shocking news. Frank had been severely wounded on Omaha Beach. He was in a hospital in England where they were doing the heroic attempt of keeping him alive. They were able to save his life by performing surgeries that were until then unknown to the medical world. He was used as a guinea pig for new surgical procedures and became a living miracle.

All this time Megan could do nothing. Worry and fear ruled her life. Yet she now had a small child that needed her attention. Emotions raged through her life so intensely that she could not function other than on automatic pilot. Slithers of news would from time to time come through from England, easing her mind that Frank was at least alive. She would get to see him again, hold him again. But how would he be? From the reports she was receiving she understood the injuries had been so severe that it could have changed him as a person. She might be married to Frank by name, but it might not be the same man she knew. She had heard that in stories from other soldier’s wives.

After months of intense rehabilitation Frank finally returned to the United States of America. Missing one leg, and being badly scarred in his face due to grenade shards, Megan could at least live again. Frank was still Frank, in spite of his physical changes.

But there were some changes that were to be expected. The nightmares, the sudden fears that could not be explained, not to mention moments of depression. Megan supported Frank in all possible ways, but she knew that more help was needed. The medical world did not provide any answers, so they found strength at the local church. They both became heavily involved in the church activities. With new strength found in his belief, Frank threw himself into life full force. His awareness of how precious life truly is, was increased a hundredfold by his near death experience and his connection with God. His devotion as a husband and father became an example for society. But church did not help him and Megan with the emotional trauma they had experienced. Even worse, the church leaders told Frank that his problems were God's punishment for Frank's ungodly decision to go to war. With that Frank and Megan's belief in God as well as those ministering to them faded like a snowflake in the mid summer sun.

Then their attention shifted to believing in science. After all, it was the scientific miracle that had saved Frank's life in the hospital in England. It became the drive for a career in the world of science and it soon became an obsession. Frank became a spokesman for scientific research, leaving his church life further and further behind him. With all Frank and Megan had gone through, these really had been times of fear and yet times of triumph. But it did leave an emotional scar on both of them that was still lingering on, and would probably be there for the rest of their lives.

I see your point, Megan mumbled. But isn't the 'even in case of coma' a little too much? Be realistic Megan, Frank replied. If I were to end up in a coma, we both know that that would be no different than me being dead, so I might as well. Yes, but what if the research advances enough to bring you back to a normal life. Frank had thought about that one for a
