Los Angeles, California
Wednesday, May 9th, Noon
It was already a hot day in Los Angeles and the temperature was expected to keep making its run to a record ninety three degrees. The average temperature should have been in the mid seventies. Downtown Los Angeles was in no mood for it. The weekend was too far away and the only relief was in the air conditioned offices where nothing less than a full day’s work was expected. For that reason many braved the heat to go find a cool place to eat their lunch.
For such an unusually hot day it was strange to see the tall man in a trench coat and white gloves standing outside the Los Angeles police headquarters. Nobody had seen him arrive. It was as if he just appeared. He had stood there unwavering for at least an hour, Aside from his unusual outfit the only thing anybody would remark later about him were that he had a soft smile, tussled, dark blond hair and that he wore no shoes on his curiously large feet.
Several people, including some police officers, entering and exiting the building had looked strangely at him but the man had just nodded his head gently at them. He never made a sound. It was an assistant district attorney for the city that had first raised the question about the odd man standing outside. Word got around the building quickly about the watcher outside until finally the desk sergeant sent two detectives out to question the man. A couple of patrol officers accompanied the detectives outside but waited near the entrance of the building. Curiosity got the better of them.
The two detectives approached the man casually but cautiously. You could never tell what a perp was hiding under a trench coat. The watcher saw the detectives approaching him and turned his head slightly towards them. He smiled and nodded gently. The officers looked at each other but didn’t slow their advance.
Sir, can we help you?
The man said nothing. He gently closed his eyes, bowed his head and slowly bent his knees, before standing up straight and returning to his smiling self.
What the hell? Hey Joe, he thinks we’re the Queen of England. Look buddy, you gotta go. You can’t stand here,
said the first detective.
Sir? Sir? Maybe he doesn’t understand us. Maybe we need to show him.
The second detective put his hand on the tall man’s shoulder and grabbed him tight. The smile faded from the tall man. Under the trench coat the man hunched his shoulders past the unusual two or three inches to an impossible height nearing the top of his head. Both detectives tried to back up but they were too slow. The flash of white coming up from the front of the trench coat moved so fast that the police officers couldn’t immediately tell what it was. They reached for their service weapons but only got to the point of putting their palms around the guns without being able to draw them. They just stood there in awe not knowing what to do next.
The trench coat made its way to the ground and before them stood a man in a white suit that covered him from his neck to his ankles. More surprisingly, the man sported white, glistening, fifteen foot, feathered wings. The winged man crouched a bit as if he was about to pounce the officers. One of
