Author

Leo Tolstoy

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a Russian author of novels, short stories, novellas, plays, and philosophical essays. He was born into an aristocratic family and served as an officer in the Russian military during the Crimean War before embarking on a career as a writer and activist. Tolstoy’s experience in war, combined with his interpretation of the teachings of Jesus, led him to devote his life and work to the cause of pacifism. In addition to such fictional works as War and Peace (1869), Anna Karenina (1877), and The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886), Tolstoy wrote The Kingdom of God is Within You (1893), a philosophical treatise on nonviolent resistance which had a profound impact on Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. He is regarded today not only as one of the greatest writers of all time, but as a gifted and passionate political figure and public intellectual whose work transcends Russian history and literature alike.

Landowner, peasant and horse brave the elements to finalise a matter of financial gain. The reader feels the pain and the different types of suffering according to class and status as the wind blows, the snow comes in drifts and they go off course. You think they are saved but they are not - they make a further mistake with dire consequences. It is an on the edge of your seat read - and best read somewhere warm.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short read. There are many lessons in it for humankind and I for one won't be letting go of them. Highly recommended.

When a story that includes freezing to death in a Russian blizzard is the most uplifiting in a book of short stories, you know you're reading Russian literature.

I'm a huge Tolstoy fan, so I knew I would probably love this book when it was recommended to me and it didn't disappoint in the least. Tolstoy gives us the perspective of multiple characters as they battle against nature (both their internal natures as well as the rugged winter) and struggle to survive. For me, Tolstoy's writing is timeless because even though technology has advanced, human nature is still very much the same.

I know that Tolstoy was a genius and a talented author. However, this story seemed quite bland to me and I found that it never really "grabbed" me in a way that could be comparable to "War and Peace".
