Horatio Alger
Horatio Alger (1832-1899) was an American author of children’s literature. While the majority of his works are young adult novels categorized by what came to be called the “Horatio Alger myth”—in which a young boy escapes poverty through hard work, determination, and the assistance of a wealthy benefactor—Alger also wrote poetry and short stories throughout his long, successful career. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Alger was greatly inspired by the Protestant work ethic, and sought to write books for children with moral, inspirational themes. Successful during his lifetime, Alger’s works remained popular through the beginning of the twentieth century, and to this day he is recognized as a pioneer of young adult fiction.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5For Christmas, I ordered an mp3 player (Library of Classics) that was pre-loaded with 100 works of classic literature in an audio format. Each work is in the public domain and is read by amateurs, so the quality of the presentation is hit or miss. After sampling about a dozen more well-known offerings, I was left to select those with which I was less familiar. That is how I came across Adrift in New York by Horatio Alger. The novel is set in 19th century New York City. It involves a wealthy, older gentleman living with a nephew and niece. The nephew is a dastardly and conniving man, intent upon acquiring the wealth of his uncle. To that end, he had the uncle’s son kidnapped as a small child and seeks to estrange his cousin from the uncle’s affections with an eye toward being his uncle’s sole heir. While this is not a BAD story, it is simple in the extreme, utterly predictable and filled with the most egregious clichés. Two and a half stars at best.
