Many thanks to Leslie Nuernberg for her skillful editing and insightful comments, to Mr. Joseph Carroll for his faithful ministry of the Word of God, to all the staff of the EI School of Biblical Training for their encouraging fellowship these many years, and to my beloved wife whose constant encouragement and inspiring love for Jesus Christ has been a fountain of blessing to me.
I STEPPED OUT OF MY office and took a deep breath. It had been a very tiring day. The sun was unusually warm for six o'clock in the evening and the air was so thick I felt like I could lean against it and not fall over. As I slowly made my way to the parking lot, my attention was drawn skyward. I paused and silently watched an aerial ballet.
A hawk calmly circled in the air in spite of being repeatedly dive-bombed by half a dozen irate crows. The noisy crows were frantically flapping their wings to rise above the hawk to get in position for their next attack. The hawk, for its part in the aerial drama, never altered course. It continued to circle ever upward, utterly ignoring the frustrated crows. One by one the smaller birds grew weary, broke off their attack, and spiraled down to the earth to rest in the trees. The hawk, on the other hand, rose ever higher in the same lazy circle. Then all at once, without ever flapping a wing, the majestic bird glided in a straight line high above the mountain ridge, alone, and free, unruffled by the ineffective attack of the crows.
As I stood and watched that hawk I thought of Isaiah 40:31. But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Surely, God intends for me to live above the downward pull of the flesh and the noisy, frantic activities and attacks of men and devils. The hawk remained so utterly peaceful, so completely unmoved by his attackers. It was the bird's enemies who were frantic and frenetic. I wondered how I could live consistently above the restlessness of this world.
