      The Bible part of this volume is pretty standard; the NIV is perhaps the easiest to read of the popular translations, so you'll see "killed" instead of "slew" or "fathered" instead of "begat." That goes a long way toward making the Bible accessible.

      Even if you're not religious, I'd suggest reading The Bible at least once, as it'll help you get more out of literature, music, and film. If you don't want to do a full read-through, I'd suggest the NIV Pathways Bible, also by Zondervan. It includes a variety of reading plans, some as short as 14 days, that'll help you get straight to the parts that are most often quoted or referenced.

      While the Pathways Bible offers several reading plans, this one is focused on just one, which breaks the Bible down into 365 daily readings. A typical day's reading might be two chapters from the Old Testament, one chapter from the New, and a Proverb or Psalm. The whole thing takes about 15 minutes, so you can easily fit it into your day or catch up if you miss a day. By the end of one year, you'll have read The Bible cover to cover, a feat which 80% of Americans and more than a third of evangelical Christians have never accomplished (Barna Group, "The Books Americans are Reading", 2013). Each section ends with a link back to the reading plan, so you can easily navigate from one reading to the next without having to manage a bunch of bookmarks.

      This particular reading plan may not work for everybody, so look around online and think about what you might prefer. With a straight cover-to-cover or chronological reading, it's easier to follow the story, but sometimes you'll get stuck in a dull section for several days, and that can be a bit demotivating. This book mixes it up, so if today's Old Testament reading is dull, no big deal, the other two will probably be better. The downside is that you're reading three books in parallel, each one in five minute increments, so your progress with any one story is going to be slow.
