About this ebook
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this “charming, compassionate little masterpiece” (The Philadelphia Inquirer), Pulitzer–Prize winning author Anna Quindlen traces the coming-of-age of a young girl struggling to find her way within the tangle of her quirky, loving Irish-Catholic family.
“A small triumph . . . elaborate and playful . . . honest and deeply felt . . . Here is the Quindlen wit, the sharp eye for details of class and manners, the ardent reading of domestic lives.”—The New York Times (Best Books of the Year)
It is the 1960s, in suburban New York City. Maggie Scanlan and her family are in the thrall of her powerful grandfather Jack Scanlan. In the summer of her twelfth year, Maggie is desperately trying to master the object lessons her grandfather fills her head with. But there is too much going on to concentrate. Everything at home is in upheaval, her grandfather is changing, and Maggie is unsure if what she wants is worth having. . . .

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Couldn't believe (although I grew up hearing that irish and Italians don't mix) mostly because, Irish and Italians are all white; and even all Catholic! So what's the problem?
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A story of a young girl growing up but more a story of the impact of a larger-than-life patriarch on the rest of the family.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Object Lessons by Anna Quindlen; (4*)I enjoyed this coming of age story of three generations of an Irish family where the patriarch rules all. (little surprise at the end of the book about that) Our protagonist is the 13 year old granddaughter, Maggie, and I would have to say that the story is nearly as much about her mother, Connie, as it is about Maggie. This is a coming of age tale both in the literal and figurative sense. Young and old alike, the characters all realized that in the end no matter what effect other people had on them it was up to them on how they react to those outside influences. It is what they decide about who or what they will become that truly matters and not what others expect or want from them.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Enjoyed this other book by Quindlen about a family in trouble.
