About this ebook

New York Times bestselling author Luanne Rice explores the complex emotional equations of love and loyalty that hold together three pairs of remarkable sisters, in an unforgettable story of loss, redemption, and forgiveness

The storm off Mackinac Island that engulfed Maura Shaw’s husband and elder daughter,Carrie, also swept away the illusion of her life as the perfect midwestern wife and mother. Now, after years away, Maura has returned to Rhode Island to teach English at the fabled Newport Academy and to seek a new beginning. Newport has never failed to infuse Maura with a sense of mystery and hope, but ever since the accident, her younger daughter, fourteen-year-old Beck, has retreated into the safe, predictable world of mathematics. Without Carrie, Beck has lost half of herself—the half that would have fit into the elite private school she and her brother, Travis, will attend. The half that made things right. Sixteen-year-old Travis is also struggling to adjust—juggling a long-distance first love and an attraction to a girl with a wicked sparkle in her eye. And for Maura, ghosts linger here—an unresolved breach with her own beloved sister and a long-ago secret that may now have the power to set her free. . . .

just OK. I didn't much like the story line. Daughter Carrie leaves after father dies in canoe accident. Lots of secrets. Youngest daughter is math wizard who is very troubled. Old flame JD, teaching a new school which includes kids education, happen to be in town with estranged sister and runaway daughter.....too much to believe and I didn't.

Maura Shaw has returned to Newport, Rhode Island, with two of her three children. Her elder daughter, Carrie, disappeared from the hospital where she was taken following a boating accident in which her father drowned. Maura’s sister, Katharine, an artist, lives in RI. Maura is to be a teacher at the prestigious Newport Academy and daughter Beck and son Travis will attend as students. A new start is what this family needs to mend. Elder sisters Maura and Katharine need to find their way back to each other and Beck, who is seeking life’s answers in the world of mathematics, needs for her sister Carrie to find her way home. This was a very satisfying story of family, sisters, and friends in an examination of how the past can influence the future.

Maura Shaw is a young widow with a missing daughter and two grieving remaining children. To try and give them a new beginning, Maura accepts a teaching job back home in Rhode Island and moves the family there. They all miss the older daughter Carrie and Travis and Beck struggle to feel at home in their new school. All characters are richly fleshed out in this absorbing novel, another Luanne Rice success.
