—Judith Ivory
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Karen Ranney returns to the Highlands with A Highland Duchess—the second book in her lush Scottish historical romance series which began with Sold to a Laird. The story of a duchess taken captive briefly—just long enough to fall in love—by a lusty Scotsman, A Highland Duchess is a wildly romantic, deeply emotional tale. Romance readers adore Scotland-set love stories…and Karen Ranney’s are a cut above all the rest!
Karen Ranney
Karen Ranney wanted to be a writer from the time she was five years old and filled her Big Chief tablet with stories. People in stories did amazing things and she was too shy to do anything amazing. Years spent in Japan, Paris, and Italy, however, not only fueled her imagination but proved she wasn't that shy after all. Now a New York Times and USA Today bestseller, she prefers to keep her adventures between the covers of her books. Karen lives in San Antonio, Texas.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5It started out alright, although I found the circumstances of Emma's 1st marriage implausible. Furthermore, I think she was more bothered about her reputation and social standing than being bothered about what happened to her mind and person. After the first third of the book, my attention started to waver and after a while I started skipping pages.
Other people might well enjoy this book, but it just wasn't for me. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Emma, Duchess and a recent widow, is still in her mourning period, but about to come out of it. Then he uncle informs her that she is to be married again, willingly or not, she has no choice in the matter. Then that night, a stranger comes into her bedroom and kidnaps her for he is in search of a mirror, a gift from her late husband, that she had practically forgotten about. Now Emma is his captive, and send her uncle a ransom: the mirror, for his niece. However it is apparent that her uncle could care less if she ends up not returning to him dead or alive, ever since her husbands death, has gambled away her fortune and if she were dead he would have full access to it. Emma even though captured, has felt more at home with Ian that she has ever been with anyone else, and she opens her heart to him, even knowing that there is no future for them, for she is to marry another, as is he.....but sometimes the matters of the heart have a way of disrupting best laid plans....A Highland Duchess is the most recent book from Karen Ranney. As far as romances go, this was a average read for me. I could get into the story, but it wasn't like I couldn't put it down, I actually ended up pausing multiple times through the story. It wasn't a enlightening read or enchanting, but there was a drama about the story that held a certain appeal for me. I have usually enjoyed reading books from this author, so I was surprised when I had such a challenging time getting through this one. I found that there wasn't much consistency of engaging the reader much. The story had some flow, but it could be erratic at times. I did enjoy the characters and the emotional side of the story. There were parts of the story that drew me, but there were other parts, where I had to force myself to read through it. Overall it was a enjoyable read, but not one I would want to buy or re read....
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Very disappointing. The heroine spent most of the book as a complete doormat just letting life happen to her and not trying to do anything on her own. The initial plot device to introdue the hero and heroine to each other was completely useless. Its never really explained why the hero went to these lengths - well, its explained but makes no sense. Some devices in the middle of the book were a complete waste and not what I expect in a romance novel. I don't want to go into too much detail and spoil the plot but just an incredible waste of time.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5First off, I must state that I respect the author, Karen Ranney and I loved her book "The Devil Wears Tartan". I am also very fond of her Highland Lords Series. As for her latest book, she might as well have PHONED IT IN! The first thing that comes to mind in regards to this book is - disappointment. I was really shocked that this was even published. As of late, her work is just not cutting it. This story was BLAND as bland can get. It felt to me as she didn't even TRY to develop the characters, let alone the whole story! What really disappoints is that it COULD (SHOULD) have been very good. The bones were there, and that is the ONLY reason that I read it all through the AGONIZING end. I should have FELT something for Emma, but the writing was so bland, and rushed through that as a reader I felt only ANGER at the Author for not at least trying harder to do these characters justice!! What a waste of time!!!! I do NOT recommend it. PLEASE do not buy it! You will be greatly disappointed.
