With Carla, a spaniel, and Nicholas, a cat, she set up a smallholding in the days when subsistence farming was almost a necessity. During this period she wrote the novels It Happened to Rain, A Breeze in the Barley and Four Ducks on a Pond. She died in 1982.view less
