He received his PhD from the Central South University of Technology in 1996 (now Central South University). His main focus is on teaching and research in tunnel and underground engineering. His research includes impact assessment and risk control for sensitive structures adjacent to tunnels, amelioration of tunnel defects, construction mechanics and risk assessment, shield technology, and other areas focusing on tunnelling and geotechnical mechanics. He has led over 50 projects for government and enterprise, and has published over 200 papers, a monograph, and five textbooks.view less
