He participated in the 1970 Master Class "Music Concrete" of Pierre Schaeffer.
"Between 1969 and 1978 he was appointed as Music Supervisor/Coordinator and film composer by the French network. Afterwards he studied between 1978-1983 Philosophy and Clinical Psychopathology at Amsterdam University and in 1985 he completed his study and training in psychoanalysis with Paul-Laurent Assoun (Paris). He worked for decades as a psychoanalyst in forensic psychiatric hospitals with psychopathic patients. In 1997 he earned his PhD Forensic Psychiatry at Tilburg University, The Netherlands. Martens wrote more than 100 articles in international journals and chapters of books.

All of his albums were composed, produced and conducted by William Martens himself. Martens Ensemble plays his music. His compositions are frequently experienced as a gateway to another world. His compositions contain electro-acoustic elements, He makes use of traditional classical instruments, as well as of modern electronic equipement and soundshapes which are created from live sampling of all kinds of industrial and nature sounds. Martens produce sound oriented symphonic masterpiece that tells a story. The music are made up with colorful sounds that are reminiscent of any sci-fi flick or music that has an adventure or magic carpet ride. His compositions are characterized by a cinematic and eclectic approach to creating a full length pieces that does tell a story.
