He...view moreMARSHAL JOSEPH JACQUES CÉSAIRE JOFFRE (1852-1931) was a French general who served as Commander-in-Chief of French forces on the Western Front from the start of World War I until the end of 1916. He is best known for regrouping the retreating allied armies to defeat the Germans at the strategically decisive First Battle of the Marne in September 1914. Born on born on January 12, 1852 in Rivesaltes, Pyrénées-Orientales, he led spring offensives in 1915, in Verdun in 1916, and the Anglo-French offensive on the Somme in 1916. He was promoted to Marshal of France, the first such promotion under the Third Republic, moved to an advisory role, and became leader of the Supreme War Council in 1918. When he retired in 1919, he was made a member of the Académie française and in 1920 he presided over the Jocs Florals in Barcelona, a Catalan literary certamen. He died in Paris on January 3, 1931, aged 78.
COLONEL THOMAS BENTLEY MOTT, S.S., D.S.M., L.M. (1865-1952) was a decorated American army officer. Born on May 16, 1865 in Leesburgh, Virginia, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1886. He was commissioned and promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1911 and was Colonel of the National Army and then the U.S. Army in 1918. He was commended in orders for gallantry and services in the Manila campaign. He was the Liaison Officer between Marshal Foch and lifelong friend General Pershing. He was a military attaché to the American Embassy in Paris from 1919-1930. He died in Biarritz, France in December 1952, aged 87.
COLONEL SYDNEY JOSEPH LOWE, D.S.O., O.B.E. (1880-1968) was an English army officer. Born on August 29, 1880 in Islington, North London, he joined the Royal Fusiliers in 1899 and became Lieutenant in 1900, Captain in 1905, and Adjutant to the Volunteers in 1906. He was transferred as Adjutant to the Territorial Force in 1908. He served during WWI from 1914-1915 and was promoted to Major in September 1915. He died in 1968.view less
