Encouraged to write and read by his great Uncle George E. Smitherman (the first African American to checkout a library book in Anniston, AL): Robert and his family are lovers of education, and were always encouraged to strive in school. Anthony and Lora Chatmon, his parents still reside in Anniston, and have been married for 33years. He shares his parents with his brother Anthony Chatmon II and is proud to call him "big brother." He lives with his wife and three children, and they enjoy being apart of the history that is Memphis, TN. They have lived their for 3 years, and have began to call it home.
From his aunt who was his kindergarten teacher, to his parents, and even his wife, reaching children through reading has been a family goal. Bringing the joy of reading to children at a young age is important. He believes that a book can accomplish more in one reading, than a six week summer vacation. He encourages children to pick up a book so that their mind is able to go where ever it possibly can. He believes in put as many books in front of children as he possibly can. "Allow a child's mind to run free, and they will know no limits in life," is a motto he lives by. His boys are learning that motto daily.
Robert works closely with children everyday as a History teacher and coach. He uses his role to encourage children to "dig deeper," when it comes to gaining knowledge for themselves. He believes that by showing children that they are able to think for themselves, they will make better life choices. Books give them a better chance of allowing them to think for themselves. Robert and his wife India are very proud to be teachers in the Shelby County School System, in Memphis, TN. They are encouraged daily by the minds that run free in their classrooms.view less
