This story is a compilation of observations from my experience with different groups of children and families during my ten years of working with preschoolers. The way the children reacted to their personal situations helped me to understand that the children were not without intelligence; they clearly understood what was going on in their lives even when they couldn’t yet verbally express their feelings.
In these cases the parents need to be very careful in responding to their children’s questions, pay more attention to their hearts, and be more sensitive to their feelings. Because a child, no matter his or her age, still needs to know that he or she has a father as a personal satisfaction.
Mary, Joseph’s mother, said, “You don’t have a daddy,” but could have adopted a more positive approach like this: “You know, honey, I was waiting for when you got a little bigger to talk about your daddy. Your dad is there, somewhere; he never called me. I don’t know where he is now. Maybe someday, you and I will go looking for him.” She then could have thanked Joseph for asking about his dad. By involving the child in the problem solving, Mary could have created a happy and satisfied child.view less
