It is a rapidly progressing disease and leads to wheelchair confinement. Untreated, there is a 10% chance of death, with a greater risk of death using standard drug treatment.
The author, Al Squitieri, refused those drugs, conventional treatment and the hopeless prognosis, which led to a charge of "non-compliance" by his doctors. After wasting $52,000 and 40% of his muscle, Al went to Montreal and found a Naturopathic doctor, curing his hopeless disease, using Homeopathy.
The reader follows the author through his "forty years in the wilderness" which prepared him for what was to befall him in his later years—from Al's wise guy days on the streets of East Harlem, through raising of ten children, to his battle with the disease and the U.S. health care system. His victory over tremendous odds, which included loss of health, business and a 24-year-old son, is an inspiring story that brings encouragement and hope.
This moving story will have you weeping and laughing, as Al skillfully moves forward, using baseball metaphors and analogies. Gifted with readable writing, wit and humor, he evokes every human emotion: joy, sorrow, frustration, anger and surprise. It is a Norman Cousins story, with an O. Henry ending. This novel-like true story will have you reading the entire book late into the night. At its end, you will believe that with a little faith, a good measure of perseverance and a whole lot of hope, all things are possible.view less
