Born in 1892 in Königsberg, Prussia (present-day Kaliningrad, Russia), Joachim von Kürenberg was a direct descendant of the Salzburg “Exultants,” the Protestant religious refugees from the Archbishopric of Salzburg who fled to Prussia. He attended schools in Königsberg and Rathenow and became an officer in the regiment of the Gardes du Corps. He studied art history at the Universities of Königsberg, Berlin, Zurich and Heidelberg. During World War I, he served as attaché in Constantinople, Rome and Vienna from 1914 to 1918.
After the war, he worked as an advisor in theatres in Bremen, Düsseldorf and Vienna and became a freelance writer in 1930. He emigrated to Switzerland in 1935. Following World War II, he lived in Hamburg.
Von Kürenberg was the recipient of a Golden Medal of Honour for Art and Science in 1937, a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, and a member of the National University of Arts Bucharest (UNArte).
He died in Meran, Southern Tyrol in Italy in 1954 at the age of 62.view less
