Dr Radharaman Chakrabarti

He did ...view moreA topper in Political Science with specialisation in International Relations, Radharaman Chakrabarti was educated at Presidency College, University of Calcutta and the University of London. He did his Ph.D as a Commonwealth Scholar at the London School of Economics (1966-69) during which period he also attended the Hague Academy of International Law Sumer School (1967). For his Post-doctoral work , he worked at the University of Washington (Seattle) as an Indo-US Exchange Fellow (1978-79). Though successful in several All India Competitive Services Examinations, Chakrabarti preferred the teaching profession and was appointed Assistant Professor at the Presidency College , Calcutta the very same year of his post-graduation. Subsequently, in 1971 he joined the University of Burdwan as Professor and Head of the Department of Political science where he rose to the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts. A decade later Professor Chakrabarti was appointed the First Director of Netaji Institute of Asian Studies, an interdisciplinary research organisation set up by the Government of West Bengal and continued in that position till 1997, during which period he launched the quarterly research journal “ASIAN STUDIES” which is now in its 22nd year of publication. In 1997 the newly set up Netaji Subhas Open University had him as its first Vice Chancellor and soon blossomed into a premier distance learning body in higher education. Currently, Professor Chakrabarti is attached to Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture as Project Director of a UNESCO-supported programme on Human Unity. Recently, he has been offered the Vivekananda Chair Professorship in Social Sciences by the University of Calcutta. Besides contributions to learned journals, the numerous publications of Professor Chakrabarti include six major works: Intervention and the Problem of its Control in the 20th Century, Theory & Practice of International Politics, Political Economy of India’s Foreign Policy, UN: A Study in Essentials, India’s Foreign Policy in a Globalised World Economy,Aspects of Political Thinking in India and three edited volumes: Ethno-Nationalism, The Challenges of Terrorism and India’s Constructive Engagement in Asia and Aroundview less
