His son is presently servin...view moreMaj Gen Randhir Sinh, after his schooling at Mayo College, Ajmer got commissioned into 4th Battalion 3rd Gorkha Rifles, the battalion raised and commanded by his father. His son is presently serving in it. Three generations and five members of the family have served in th Battalion.
The officer has served most of his service in insurgency areas or the borders. This includes counter insurgency operations in Manipur, Nagaland, Punjab and J&K. Has had numerous tenures in high altitude including tenures in Arunachal (Kameng and Lohit Districts), Sikkim, UP Tibet Border, East Ladakh and Siachen. He has served in the 1971 War in Bangladesh, as brigade commander on the Siachen Glacier from 1995 to 1997 and during the Kargil War as Brigadier General Staff of a Corps. He commanded a division on the Line of Control for two years which included the period of OP PARAKRAM.
He has done all important courses including Staff College and the Long Defence Management Course and has also done the apex course at the Royal College of Defence Studies in UK.
He has held major staff and instructional appointments including three tenures as an instructor. He has received the following gallantry/ distinguished awards:-
• Mention-in-Despatches during 1971 War.
• Sena Medal for Counter Insurgency Operations in the East in 1984.
• UYSM for command of the Siachen Brigade.
• AVSM for command of the division.
After retirement he worked in the corporate sector for more than a year before family issues made him resign and come home. His son was seriously injured in operations against terrorists in J&K. Amongst his family members they hold nine gallantry cum distinguished service awards.
He has been awarded the Maharana Pratap Chair for Excellence by the USI.view less
