Pure symbolism, isolation, voluntary solitude, incomprehensible rejection. Fear of the invisible and therefore unintelligible. Fear of knowledge. Light that illuminates ignorance or darkness that hides the truth. Recurring themes in Hawthorne's literature.
A simple veil can establish all these unfounded theories and even more absurd ones, from shame, unconfessable sins, unacceptable guilt.
A priest decides to cover his face for the rest of his life; his congregation, unable to comprehend the situation, withdraws from his side, and despite his qualities as a just, wise, and kind man, they shun his presence. Simply because they cannot see his face. Attributing all kinds of increasingly bizarre explanations.
A veil that conceals the face but should incite the unveiling of the souls of his parishioners. To move them to compassion, but ignorance and superstition can outweigh faith and the light of knowledge, or at least the desire for it.
Hawthorne charges this brief but instructive tale with symbolism expressed through fantasy. (Translated from Spanish)
