About this audiobook

In October of 1966, in Oakland California, Huey Newton, and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. The Panthers practiced militant self-defense of minority communities against the U.S. government, and fought to establish revolutionary socialism through mass organizing and community-based programs. The party was one of the first organizations in U.S. history to militantly struggle for ethnic minority and working class emancipation—a party whose agenda was the revolutionary establishment of real economic, social, and political equality across gender and color lines. Many words have been said about the Black Panthers...listen to what they have to say.

The disheartening thing about listening to this audiobook is that had one not known of the time that these speeches were recorded in, one could swear that it was in the current time that we're living in, as we are faced with the same kind of police brutality and presence that resembles occupying forces from a foreign country in our neighborhoods. It is refreshing to know that the Panthers identified the enemy right from the beginning of their movement- the police-and they took an active stance against them with the message of self-defense. It is also also good to know that we've had this kind of stance by the Black Panther Party as a reference point in history, because given the current climate of continued police aggression, we're going to need to return to these principles once again, of identifying our true enemy and taking a stance. Power to the people!
